Mission

The times they are a-changin' - Bob Dylan

The Inference is a class of engineering-oriented support ships designed by Temporal Engineering to replace their Intrepid Class ships. The design of the Inference is focused on providing the systems and infrastructure necessary for testing new equipment. Each Inference Class vessel specializes in a specific field of engineering.

Additionally, the Inference is designed to serve as a specialized combat vessel, against unconventional enemies such as the Borg. The standard armaments of the Inference reflect this, by focusing on specific applications over raw power.

History

At its founding, four Intrepid Class light cruisers were place under Captain Mau's command, for use in experimental warp and spatial research. Mau requested the Intrepid because of its history in anti-Borg applications, something begun by the USS Voyager.

These first Intrepids were highly modified, with most of their systems being upgraded or replaced. However, Temporal Engineering's needs were greater than could be provided by any refit vessel. With the advent of Interspace Drive, an entirely need warp power methodology was necessary, which even Temporal Engineering could not manage on an Intrepid. Additionally, the aging Intrepid was proving harder to upgrade, as its systems lagged behind those being implemented on newer vessels such as the Sovereign.

The three senior officers of Temporal Engineering collaborated at Utopia Planitia to devise a new class which would fulfill both Temporal Engineering's needs, and those of the increasingly important SDI. The product of this meeting was the initial design of the Inference Class, named after Mau's Theory of Inference, the theory which enabled Interspace Drive.

The first ship of the class, the USS Inference, was constructed at Utopia Planitia. Under the supervision of Mau and Fisk, the construction completed ahead schedule, and the USS Inference was launched in time for it to take part as the lead Temporal Engineering ship at the Battle of Setaria.

Naming Scheme

Inference Class ships are named after scientific theories or philosophical concepts, especially those fundamental to physics. Additionally, all Inference Class ships carry a number in the NCV registry, rather than NCC.

Possible class names: Entropy, Many Worlds, Relativity, Heisenberg, Entanglement, Supersymmetry, Natural Selection, Anekantavada.
